On April 26, 2015, hundreds of runners from all over Guatemala gathered in Quetzaltenango to run “La Milla”. Organized by Mission Atletica, the one-mile race awarded each runner with a pair of athletic shoes donated by Bay Area schools, businesses and individuals. The mayor and other local leaders declared the race a great success and were very happy to host an event that encourages people to participate in sports. Mission Athletica director Edgar Hernandez noted, “I knew it was a popular event with young people because they posted lots of pictures and tagged their friends on Facebook.” Mission Atletica plans to hold another race later this year, so please donate your used athletic shoes!
